Parish Newsletter – 29/30 November 2014

This week’s parish newsletter is now available here:  2014 11 30 1st Sunday of Advent B

A reminder that the 8:00am Mass today, Saturday 29th November 2014, is CANCELLED.

All other Masses this weekend are at their usual times.

The three Masses on Sunday normally celebrated in Mary Immaculate church will be celebrated in the Marymac Centre, beside the school.

The working bee that was meant to take place today (Saturday) at Saint John Fisher Church has been moved to Mary Immaculate Church to continue the clean-up there.  It will start from 9:00am – all are welcome.  If anyone has a long ladder, we’d be grateful for you to bring it – plus buckets and cloths.  Today we’ll attempt to wash the southern wall; and we’ll continue with the washing of the pews and floors to remove the remains of the dirt and mud.

Change of venue for working bee tomorrow

We were to have a working bee at Saint John Fisher Church on Saturday 29th November.

Given what has happened overnight, it makes more sense for us to spend our energy getting Mary Immaculate Church back into shape.

Therefore, all are invited to join the cleanup from 9:00am Saturday at Mary Immaculate.

Good work has been done today, so it looks a lot better than it did this morning.  But it will take several washes of the pews and floors before all the dirt is removed, and we could make some progress with washing the walls.

Photos of the damage

The following link takes you to some photos of the storm damage.

Thanks to the team who have worked hard restoring some order in the church today.  Once the roof is covered and the windows sealed, then we can get stuck into further cleaning.

Changes for this weekend

We are unsure when we will be able to use Mary Immaculate Church.  There is significant damage to the tiles on the roof, and every shower of rain pours into the church.

Therefore, the following changes will be made for this weekend, 29th/30th November, 2014:

The 8:00am Saturday morning Mass (& Adoration and Confessions) is cancelled.

The 7:30am, 9:00am and 5:00pm Masses on Sunday at Mary Immaculate will be celebrated in the Marymac Centre beside the primary school.

There is no damage at Saint John Fisher Church or Saint Elizabeth’s Chapel, so everything scheduled there will continue as normal.

Once we can stop the water coming through the roof of the church, we’ll let everyone know so that we can mount the clean-up operation.

Thanks to everyone who has shown their concern, and for the offers of help – it is truly appreciated.  And a big thank-you to those who have been helping overnight and today.

What a storm

I had heard someone say last night that there’d be a storm today, but I wasn’t expecting what we got.

All the parish buildings at Annerley have smashed windows and water damage.  Everything facing south was in the line of fire.  All the high lead-light windows in the Church along Ferndale Street are smashed, as are the windows on that side of the sanctuary.  The water was coming through the roof of the church, and down the walls from the roof, and then through the broken windows, and flowed through the floor to the library and classroom below – where the windows were also smashed by the hail.  The other buildings of the school also had their windows smashed.  The parish office had most of its front windows smashed and water through the offices on that side.  The convent had water through the roof.  The presbytery’s front windows are all smashed.  The tree at the front of the church came down, but thankfully fell over the path and not on the church or on Ipswich Road.

Reports are that there is no damage at Saint John Fisher Church, and I’ve had no reports of damage at Saint Elizabeth’s yet, although the power-line did come down near the chapel.

The school staff worked very hard to clean up the damage to the school.  The repairers are currently boarding up the windows in the parish office to make it secure.

A bit of cleaning up to continue tomorrow.

At this stage, the 7:00am Mass at Saint Elizabeth’s on Friday morning is on, as per normal.  Adoration tonight is suspended.

Mary Immaculate School will be closed on Friday 28 November due to the damage.  Parents are asked to make alternative arrangements for your children.
